Milling About in the Middle of Winter

The weather might have you doubting it, but we are currently deep in the heart of a Canadian winter. Usually at this time of year it takes bravery, parkas, and a certain degree of foolishness to head out and wander around downtown. Even so, for the past two years crowds have gathered on Mill Street in Almonte to meet and mingle during Mid-Winter Milling. This year's event takes place on Saturday, February 11 from 10–5 in Downtown Almonte. Practitioners of reiki, astrology, and vedic numerology, along with spiritual intuitives, rune readers, and Feng Shui consultants will be offering mini-sessions at various downtown shops and restaurants. Come and explore downtown Almonte on this "spiritual and self-awareness day for conscious living!"

On Friday, February 10 from 7–9pm, members of the Ottawa Mixed Media Artists association (OMMA) will draw you in to Brush Strokes in Carleton Place with the vernissage for their group show "Draw Me In." This juried show features works by almost 40 "artists with attitude", all of which include some form of drawing or expressive line work. You'll even be treated to refreshments as you meet the artists and admire their works.

Continuing on the artistic theme, on February 11 from 2–4pm you are invited to the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum to meet Nancy Cole of PEI and view her silk quilts.

Nancy's contemporary practice is based on traditional quilting skills, which she uses to produce concept-based textile art with a strong narrative component. As she puts it, "Through my own language of abstraction, I tell stories. Stories about foreign adoption, synchronicity, Canadian cultural identity, etc." The exhibition, "Letters", runs at the museum from February 7 through April 14.

And if you're still looking for ways to warm your heart throughout the winter and beyond, we hummbly suggest that you grab a copy of the February Humm at any of the wonderful shops or cafés in downtown Almonte or Carleton Place, curl up with a hot cup of coffee or cocoa, and peruse the almost 60 volunteer opportunities that are listed in our annual "Get Involved, Get Connected" issue!
