What could be better in the spring time than a trip to a Maple Sugar Camp? When Mills Community Support Home Support announced that they were planning a trip to Wheelers Pancake House and Sugar Camp, so many people wanted to go they had to add a second trip to the schedule!

The skies were sunny and the weather was very warm on Wednesday March 21st, and Friday March 23rd when the trips ran. The seniors enjoyed a scenic drive in the Mills Community Support Bus to McDonalds Corners, driven by volunteers Dougal Martin and Debbi O’Malley.

Upon arriving at Wheelers the group enjoyed a meal of pancakes and maple syrup in the beautiful log restaurant. After the meal they had a chance to take in the many sights and sounds on the property. This included a look at the evaporators used to distill the sap into syrup. Outside the participants toured the Maple Heritage Museum and admired the displays and tools used in traditional Maple Syrup production.

They also visited the sheep and Scottish Highland steers in the barn, as well as the Blacksmithing display. Of particular interest to the men in the group was the Chainsaw and Logging Display, which included an incredible variety of vintage chainsaws.

A very friendly cat acted as tour guide as many participants took a walk along the walking trails, admiring the Maple Bush and listening to the birds.

The trip was a wonderful opportunity for the seniors to enjoy a tasty meal, a walk in the fresh forest air, and social time.

The next Home Support Trip will be a tour of Parliament Hill and lunch in the city on Wednesday April 18th. To register for this, or any other Mills Community Support Home Support Trip, please contact 613-256-4700.
