The Music and Memories Program, a part of this community for 30 years, is warmly welcoming new participants. The program is run as a collaboration between the Mills Community Support Corporation and Community and Primary Health Care (formally VON Lanark) as part of the CPHC Caregiver Support Services – Alzheimer Outreach Program.

Music & Memories 002

Music and Memories offers participants a chance to enjoy a tasty lunch, musical entertainment and social time. Held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month, the program offers a warm, accepting environment for clients and their loved ones.

Music and Memories is organized by several dedicated volunteers who serve the locally-catered, hot lunch and contact the entertainers who volunteer their time and talent during the programs. "Listening to music is known to be beneficial for individuals with memory loss," says Patti Lennox of CPHC. "People often remember songs from their past and this is very comforting to them." The entertainment is mainly "Old-time Valley Music along with seasonal favourites," says Pat Barry, a volunteer of 15 years. Barry also noted that "participation is encouraged throughout the program".

Great care is taken to ensure that clients have a good experience at Music and Memories. "There will never be more than 20 people in the program," says Lennox. "We really want to make sure that the environment is enjoyable, rather than overwhelming". The program also provides a respite opportunity and an alternative to a full day program.

"Music and Memories is a wonderful program that is highly beneficial to our clients. We encourage you to call and give it a try", says Lennox.

The program takes place in the Mills Community Support Board Room, 67 Industrial Drive, Almonte. However, in the summer months it is often held outside so that participants can enjoy a picnic, the lovely weather and beautiful local scenery. The cost is $9.00 and transportation to and from the program is included. To learn more please call Mills Community Support Home Support at 613-256-4700. Hope to see you there.
