Competing in any sport for a prestigious trophy is always exciting. In the sport of lawn bowling, Friday July 6 will see Almonte Lawn Bowling Club (ALBC) hosting a District 16 Tournament to compete for the Morgan Memorial Trophy championships. The Morgan Memorial Trophy was donated to the ALBC by the family of the late Freeman Morgan of Carleton Place, a long time and successful member of the club. It is given for a triples competition, which calls for three men, women or mixed.

Tournament master for this all day event is ALBC member Denis Davignon. Registered clubs so far include two clubs from Ottawa plus Goulbourn, Galetta, Brockville and Deep River. Some clubs will have more than one team. Three twelve end games will be played during the day, with the trophy winners being the team with the highest score for the day. All winning teams will receive cash prizes including the runner-ups to the three game score, the highest two game score and the highest one game score.

Opening ceremonies will be held at 10:00 A.M. and a buffet lunch, sponsored by Waterside Retirement Residence of Carleton Place, will be served after the end of the first game . Thanks to efforts of Mississippi Mills Parks and Recreation Director Calvin Murphy, the club now boasts a new veranda and an upgrading of the facility to a good standard, ready to face completion. Due to a recent Trillium grant, ALBC now boasts a new state-of-the-art greens perimeter system and also a new greens cutter, making for a superior playing surface.

This will be ALBC’s first and only tournament of the year as they struggle to raise their membership level of skills. The club now boasts almost forty members, most of them new bowlers.
