The Rowboat Riverside Bed and Breakfast is the perfect getaway for artists and nature lovers alike. Owned by potter Chandler Swain and carpenter Michael Reynolds, the English-cottage-style home is located just five minutes from Almonte in the quaint village of Blakeney. With gallery space on site, hiking trails mere steps away, and exceptional swimming and paddling facilities right in their backyard, there is truly something for everyone.

Though Chandler and Michael opened The Rowboat in October 2011, they’ve lived in the home at 178 Blakeney Rd. for going on 11 years now. Since then, it’s been a labour of love to restore the 1950s-era residence. Chandler explains it was “practically falling down” when they moved in, but that Michael has worked tirelessly over the years to rebuild the home piece-by-piece. Chandler, meanwhile, has further explored her creative side by expanding the already elaborate flower gardens and organizing art exhibits in their in-house gallery.

Chandler says she and her husband love the ecosystem of the area and are passionate about conserving the surrounding environment, which includes beavers, otters, herons, ospreys and turtles, two beautiful old willow trees, and a stunning stretch of the Mississippi River that is home to the famed Blakeney Falls – a renowned white-water kayaking destination.

This eco-friendly mentality carries over to other aspects of their business, too. As Chandler says, the couple is “leaning towards vegetarian” and therefore refrains from serving meat products with breakfast. But they certainly don’t skimp on the quality. One of their specialties is an arugula and goat cheese omelette, while other offerings include freshly baked bread and croissants from Baker Bob’s, locally sourced fruit, and, of course, Equator coffee.

Chandler says guests who stay at The Rowboat can expect an “easy going, friendly and relaxed” environment. With just three rooms available – two river-facing and one that looks out on the garden – visitors can enjoy a peace and quiet unmatched by larger venues.

With rates ranging from $80 to $90 a night, The Rowboat offers an intimate stay for those in search of a B&B with a creative and eco-conscious twist.
