Getting autumn off to a great start…
On Tuesday the 11th, from 6–8pm, folks in the Carleton Place area won’t want to miss the Beckwith Sign Up Night. It’s a great “one-stop shopping” way to find out about all of the classes, sports and activities on offer for the fall and winter semester, and to sign yourself (and/or your kids) up for something fun. It’s taking place at Beckwith Public School, and for more information you can visit the Beckwith Township website.
On Thursday, folks of all ages are invited to the second annual Seniors’ Expo, from 9:30–3 at the Almonte Community Centre. Whether you’re over 50 (or plan to make it there some day), or are caring for seniors, you’re sure to find something of interest in this showcase of services and exhibitors that includes social service agencies, support groups, retirement homes, local attractions, pharmacies, seniors activity groups and others. Admission is free, seminars and entertainment take place throughout the day, and lunch will be available.
If last Saturday’s downpour wasn’t enough to revive your parched lawn, you can learn from an expert at the Town’s Lawn Tips seminar on Saturday morning from 9–noon at the Almonte Old Town Hall. Horticulturalist (and owner of Almonte Landscape Services) Alan Goddard will speak about how to restore your lawn, particularly after this dry summer. $2 will pay for the space and go towards providing refreshments. For more information, call 256–1077.
Coffee and Clay
On Saturday, you can help our local mudslingers celebrate their 10th anniversary! The Almonte Potters Guild Open House takes place from 10am until 4pm, and members welcome you to drop by to watch demonstrations and even try your hand at making something out of clay. All ages are welcome! For more information, visit the Almonte Potters Guild website.
At the other end of Almonte, the owners and staff at Equator Coffee welcome you to their Equator Block Party! Celebrating the one-year mark (since the grand opening at their new location at 451 Ottawa Street), they are planning a day of family fun including a corn roast, garage sale, arts and crafts, food and drink samples, and much more! Drop in any time from 10am-2pm, and find out more about them at Equator Coffee Roasters.
Finally, you can put your feet up (metaphorically — otherwise you might get glared at by the person in the row ahead of you) and enjoy an evening of upbeat tunes by Juno award winners MonkeyJunk on Saturday night at the Almonte Old Town Hall. The show starts at 8pm, and tickets are $25 door or $22 in advance from Mill St Books (256-9090). If you were lucky enough to catch this terrific trio when they played Canada Day at Gemmill Park, you already know that their live show is well worth catching, especially in the acoustically-wonderful Town Hall auditorium. See you there!
