Peter Nelson’s travels – What now – east or west?

In Phuket, we met the owner of a large trimaran who was looking for a couple of crew members. We did a tour of his ship and seriously considered signing on. He was going to sail to India and from there, on to South Africa. The romance of the sailing life has always appealed to me, and his trimaran looked to be a very trim craft. And a long ocean voyage would clear the steam of the tropics from our humid lungs.

Should we make a sharp left turn at this point in our travels? Nope. We declined his offer, and instead turned right, and wound up in Hong Kong.

Kite flying in Thailand is a very serious business. In fact, it’s called kite fighting! The contestants coat their strings with crushed glass mixed with rice glue. The idea is to cut all your opponents’ strings until yours is the last kite in the air. And the kites themselves can be quite elaborate — large and very well-decorated.

Hong Kong, where some streets get so filled with vendors’ stalls that there’s no room for any vehicle traffic, not even bicycles. The street evolves into a sidewalk.

A typical Hong Kong suburb. This is the backside of Hong Kong Island, in the South China Sea. Fishing families live on their boats in close-knit little aquatic communities.

A land community on the south side of Hong Kong Island. This side is so different from the north side, where all the big commercial and financial buildings are, as well as all the plush hotels.

The north side. What a contrast with the south side, eh? Nice shot of a junk sailing across the harbour.
