Almonte Lawn Bowling open house for new bowlers — May 21

Lawn-Bowling-450x337This year, we are offering Open House and Instruction to newcomers from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday May 21st. There will be coaches available to demonstrate the sport at no cost, and members present to answer questions about club activities. People interested in learning about lawn bowling but not sure if they want to join the club can bowl for a two week free trial after attending two instruction sessions. If one decides to join the club, the fee for new season membership is only $50.00 which includes membership in the Ontario Lawn Bowling Assn., all regularly scheduled Almonte club games, use of the club lawn bowls, and instruction and mentoring throughout the season.

Our 2016 season kicked off for returning members on Monday May 9th  at 7 pm. The AGM and potluck supper is planned for Wednesday May 25th. Games will generally take place each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening (weather permitting) from 7 pm. As per past practice, there are no assigned teams—as people show up prior to game start, they are randomly placed on a team for that evening’s game.

There is something for everyone, including those new to the sport and those who are more experienced, those who are wanting a friendly summer past-time, and those who are wanting a more competitive sport. Monday nights, beginning in June, include a social get together in the clubhouse after the game with refreshments, laughter, and announcements about upcoming events. Wednesday night scores will be tallied for each player, contributing to an overall season score for the Marathon Lawn Bowling prize to be awarded at the AGM in September.

This year, we anticipate extra excitement as we ready our club for the Ontario Trillium Foundation public announcement of a $94,800 capital grant awarded to the Almonte Lawn Bowling Club. This money is allocated to support renovations to lighting on the greens, landscaping for better greens accessibility, erection of an equipment shed, and the purchase of a new roller for greens maintenance.

Further to the excitement, the ALBC is honoured to be selected to host the Governor General’s Lawn Bowling Tournament, to be held over the September long weekend. Volunteers from the ALBC are currently involved in planning for this prestigious event, awarded to the club for its excellent greens and friendly members.
