Now that the trick-or-treaters have been sugared up and the jack-o-lanterns are in the compost pile, our collective thoughts turn to the next big celebration on the horizon. Though it's still almost two months away, we can gently gear up for the holiday season with a couple of local events offering some crafty, creative Christmas ideas. Handmade Harvest bills itself as "the ultimate place to find one of a kind holiday gifts and spend an afternoon surrounded by inspiration" – how can you go wrong? It takes place Friday, 4-9pm and Saturday, 10am-4pm at the Almonte Old Town Hall. Conveniently and concurrently, the 23rd annual Christmas in the Valley Artisan Show takes place Friday, 2-9pm, Saturday 9am-4pm at the Almonte Community Centre. Featuring a juried selection of over 25 artisans, crafters and bakers presenting their work in a relaxed and festive atmosphere, you are sure to find original, quality gifts made with exquisite attention to detail.
Some people prefer to hold off on their yuletide thinking until closer to December, and the Humm's calendar is pleased to offer a few selections this week that have nothing to do with December 25. On Saturday from 10am-4pm, Interval House is hosting a Women's Fair at the Carleton Place Arena. This event will showcase over 45 women's businesses and offers seminars throughout the day. Meanwhile, Willow, the latest addition to the eclectic and exciting mix of businesses in downtown Almonte's Heritage Court, will have special guest Matt Carkner of the Ottawa Senators in the store from 1-2pm signing autographs. They will also be collecting donations to Big Brothers/Big Sisters for chance to win a team-signed stick & other prizes. On Sunday at 2pm, the Almonte Old Town Hall is the place to be when Professor David Wilson reads from his book Thomas D'Arcy McGee Volume 2: The Extreme Moderate. This Celtfest 2012 Fundraiser will also feature original music by The McGee Band that is fresh, innovative & respectful of its traditional roots.
