The Town of Mississippi Mills currently operates and maintains 15 bridges and 11 large culvert structures with a span greater or equal to 3 metres. These assets currently carry a combined replacement value of $13.3 million dollars.

The Town’s infrastructure deficit relating to its bridge and large culverts is a significant issue facing the community. Short term repair needs (2014 to 2018) now sit at $4.5 million which represents 33% of the replacement value of the overall asset pool ($13.3 million). Eighteen (18) of the Town’s twenty six bridge (26) assets were built in the 1940’s and 1950’s and many of these structures are now in need of urgent and extensive repairs. Delayed maintenance and replacement practices over the last 20 years have resulted in a “log jam” in the Town’s infrastructure plan leaving the Town with few options available to further defer the situation. Many of the bridges have load restrictions in place and further cost effective deferral measures are simply no longer available.

State of Affairs – Bridges

At the network level, the Town’s bridges are currently in a poor overall condition with 2 structures rated good (BCI of 70-100), 3 structures rated as fair (BCI of 60-70) and 8 structures rated as poor (BCI of 0-60). Once the Campbell’s Bridge has been completed this fall, the number of structures will fall to 9.
