Almonte and Carleton Place are just down the road from one another – and our hospitals are close by as well. We have a history of collaboration – working as a team to provide the best care close to home for our local communities.
As the CEOs of these two local hospitals, we know this is important. We’ve been doing it for some time. For example, when patients in Carleton Place need complex continuing care, they are safely transferred to the Rosamond Unit in Almonte. In fact, the physician lead for Rosamond is Dr. Marty White, former Chief of Staff at CPDMH, who has privileges in both hospitals. We are implementing a joint pharmacy system that will improve the safety of medication delivery in both hospitals and we share pharmacy staff.
There is more we can do. A more connected system will help us to meet the needs of the communities we serve. Health care is complex – so we need to think and plan differently. We need to work more closely with all of our partners to help ensure the best access to care.
Both Hospital Boards are on board and keen to get started. Marcel Pinon, Board Chair in Carleton Place notes: “We are excited about the opportunities to improve accessibility, quality, coordination and how we use precious health care resources.”
Almonte Board Chair Paul Virgin agrees: “The first job is to review the needs of our communities and the services we offer. From there, we can look for opportunities to better align our services and work together to meet those needs.”
So what’s the plan? To get started, a Steering Committee, with leaders from both hospitals, is developing a work plan for the coming year.
