The summer bowling fun at Almonte Lawn Bowling Club began in mid-May with our Yard Sale, Open House, and Instruction Sessions with Bob Thomson. Since June 1st, the club has been bowling every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 7-9 pm, and Thursday evenings for those interested in competitive lawn bowling. Turn-outs for the games have been robust, with several new members joining the club to enjoy the sport and socializing.
On June 29th, Almonte hosted the annual Centennial Cup tournament. The day dawned cool and cloudy with a threatening sky. Nevertheless, tireless volunteers under the direction of Draw Master, Al Jones, prepared the greens and organized food for the participants. A warm cup of coffee and treats saw the day start with 12 teams from various locations in Eastern Ontario. Though the heavens opened up for a brief downpour mid-morning, the clouds dissipated by noon and the day turned out sunny and warm. A wonderful lunch of cold meats, salads, and desserts fortified the players for their three 12-end game tournament, and a great time was had by all on the excellent greens of Almonte. Winners of the Centennial Cup with a 3 game high score were from Nepean—Gerry Laporte, Joelle Russell, and Peter Aldous. Second place winning team was from Galetta—Russell Oatman, Andy Tait, and Robert Jennings.
This year, ALBC is trying some different approaches to keeping members interested in their game. On Wednesday evenings, the scores of each participant are logged, with the intent to award a Marathon high score at the end of the season. Jitney social occurs as usual on Monday evenings, attracting large turn-outs of players who enjoy the 8-end game, and socializing with goodies and refreshments after the game in the club house. On Friday evenings, club organizers are trying a couple of new bowling alternatives called Australian Pairs, and Skirling. Upcoming Lawn Bowling tournaments include the Doreen Morgan Memorial Tournament on August 1st, Almonte District Playdowns August 15/16, and Novice Tournament August 18th.
