After five years of performing & touring, Almonte singer-songwriter, Kelly Sloan will be re-entering the studio to record her third full-length album of original material. She will be traveling to Halifax, Nova Scotia in August 2015 to record at the Echo Chamber and will be working with highly esteemed musicians in the Canadian indie scene. Kelly admits that the album has been a long time coming and has appreciated all the persistent and well-intentioned queries about when to expect the next release. After the last five years of playing festivals, showcases, and countless other gigs, Kelly is excited to record a project that represents the development and experience that she has gained over recent years. She explains, “I want to have something to sell and to showcase that represents where I am right now, and not where I was five, or seven years ago. I have learned a lot since I first took a stab at songwriting and I’m ready to acknowledge where I am now and continue to move forward.”
In addition to the busy schedule of the last few years and as an independent musician, Kelly has been looking for a viable way to fund the upcoming album. While many suggested crowd funding, the lack of instant tangibility did not sit right with her. She wanted people to get something for their money right away. So instead there will be a concert held in her hometown at the Almonte United Church on Friday, July 24th. To get folks excited about the concert and to show her appreciation to the community that has supported her over the years, the show will take a different format than usual. Kelly will be performing some of her new songs that will be on the upcoming album but she is also asking people to send in their song requests ahead of time via email & twitter. (email@example.com & @kellysloanmusic) If an individual is the first person to request a song that Kelly performs at the show, they will receive a free album when they are released.
Another reason for this unconventional format is because Kelly is often asked to sing various favourites, from classical and opera to blues, country and jazz standards. In fact, the various styles influence much of her songwriting. However, her original material represents the culmination of her influences, experience and original creativity. She felt that by presenting a format in which she could demonstrate the new direction her songwriting has taken her, combined with showing her appreciation by playing people’s favourites, then everyone could walk away feeling their $20 was well spent.
So, what do you need to know?
