‘Write for Rights’ at United Church — December 9

On Friday December 9th between 1pm and 3pm and again from 6pm – 8pm, a Write for Rights event will be held at Almonte United Church ( Elgin Street). You, your friends and family are all invited to participate!

Write for Rights is an annual undertaking of Amnesty International – a global movement of over 7 million people in more than 150 countries working together to protect and promote human rights. It is held on or close to December 10th – International Human Rights Day and honors the proclamation in 1948 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Amnesty International is a respected and authoritative voice on human rights, and fully investigates cases before declaring that human rights have been violated. It is guided by international human rights laws and standards and is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest, or religion. It’s work is supported wholly by individual donations.

All materials required for letter-writing, information about the ten cases that have been selected by Amnesty International Canada for advocacy, and guidelines on how to write an effective letter, are provided. A donations tin will be on site for contributions toward the cost of international postage.

Writing letters is a powerful tool for change. As letters, tweets, and emails start arriving at government offices, prison cells, and family homes, change happens and hope grows.

Prisoners get better conditions and some are released.

Human rights become a matter of discussion and action.

Please join us at the letter-writing tables this coming DECEMBER 9TH!
