High-speed, High-capacity telephone, TV and Internet over optical fibre
MM2020 Pakenham Working Group is conducting a per household survey to pull this together: https://www.surveymonkey.ca/r/SN9YNB8
MM2020 is a community volunteer group, supported by the Municipality of Mississippi Mills, working to provide broadband access to all Mississippi Mills residents. The MM2020 Pakenham Working Group had their first meeting on April 17, 2018 with many enthusiastic individuals stepping up to help.
At this first session, Mike O’Malley, MM2020 representative, provided background on the MM2020 project to date. By year end we will see all Almonte residents and businesses with gigabit fiber access; service levels that are amongst the best in Canada; Appleton is moving forward with purchasing a community-wide service paid for by the residents; Clayton is currently surveying their residents and will be looking for a community contract for both broadband and cellular service.
Originally, the MM2020 plan was for each service area/community to work together for a bulk purchase of service with MM2020 assisting with the technical aspects of the network as well as dealing with the providers.
Mr. O’Malley announced that their current plan is that service for all of Mississippi Mills can be contracted through one provider if Mississippi Mills Council is prepared to assist with financial support. He provided a detailed report on the status of the MM2020 project that he and Clem Pelot (Clayton Broadband Working Group) presented to the Mississippi Mills Council that evening (April 17, 2018). The report was well received (author’s note: by a standing ovation of ALL spectators, and we all know how hard that is to accomplish in those chambers) and Mr. O’Malley and Mr. Pelot will be working with the municipality on this project. This is very good news. Their presentation to Mississippi Mills Council included a recommendation to have Town staff work on the following: 1) Development of a rural road fibre network; 2) Development of a capital model; 3) Development of an RFP for a provider partner.
The purpose of the MM2020 Pakenham Working Group is to survey all the households in Pakenham (the hamlet, Cedar Hill, and the surrounding rural catchment area) to inform all residents of the opportunity represented by the MM2020 Broadband plan, and to create a unified Pakenham buying group tasked to replace obsolete and expensive telephone, TV and internet delivery with reliable broadband service. Current digital access needs as well as contemporary Voice-over-IP and Video-chat supporting emerging application services such as telehealth require infrastructure supporting unlimited bandwidth.
Their goal is to have solutions in place by the end of 2018.
Residents of Pakenham are asked to please complete our community survey at https://www.surveymonkey.ca/r/SN9YNB8. Hard copies are available at the Pakenham General Store, Nicholson’s Sundries or the Pakenham Branch Library and can be returned there. All information will be kept confidential and used for no other project than this. Any contact information will only be used to share updates.
The Working Group is also looking for Road Representatives. Please let them know if you can serve as a Road Representative, to talk to your neighbours about the project and get their input on the survey. We’d like a 100% return rate.
