Honouring a forgotten hero: June 3

On August 26, 1909, the S. S. Ohio struck a rock off the B.C. coast and sank.

George Eccles, a native of Almonte and the ship’s telegrapher, remained at his post, summoning help from nearby vessels until 208 crewmen were rescued. It cost him his life. Eccles was buried in the family plot in St. Paul’s Community Cemetery, but his grave site is unmarked.

On June 3rd, 2018, at 2:00 pm, you are invited to join a group of Mississippi Mills residents for the dedication of a monument to mark the grave of George E. Eccles
