Featured artists: Carol Bajen-Gahm and Michael Pittman
Vernissage/Meet the artists: Sat July 21, 3pm-6pm

From July 13 to Aug 19, 2018, Almonte’s Sivarulrasa Gallery is pleased to present a duo exhibition Terre-Neuve, featuring new and recent works by Newfoundland-based artists Carol Bajen-Gahm and Michael Pittman. Both artists are story-tellers, drawing on their personal experiences as well as the rich folklore, landscape, and history of their surroundings.

Carol Bajen-Gahm lives on the east coast of Newfoundland, working from her studio on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The rugged landscape and constantly changing light of her surroundings are inspirations for her work.

Her Root Cellar Meditation and Encounters paintings address the realities of life on an island in the North Atlantic, including its harsh winters. Working with a variety of media including inks, oil pigment sticks, and wax, her works are richly layered and nuanced. Her process is intuitive and organic, creating dense abstract patterns that are constantly changing. “At some point chaos occurs,” she notes, “my job is to bring the disparate elements into balance.”

Michael Pittman was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and continues to base his studio practice on the island. His works draw on both personal history and regional folklore. Often introspective and highly subjective, the works possess a mystical quality that speaks to viewers at an intuitive level. “When I create images or things, I gather my experiences around a particular subject and transcribe them in a way that makes some kind of intuitive sense,” he states. Working with acrylic, charcoal, graphite, and ink, the works are multi-layered and evocative of hidden histories, specific places, and memories, both real and imagined.

Vernissage/Meet the Artists: Sat July 21, 3pm-6pm. Artists Carol Bajen-Gahm and Michael Pittman will be in attendance.
