From the Front of the Choir
By Jennifer Noxon
On December 16, 2018, close to one hundred and fifty singers of all stripes and abilities came out to The Big Sing! in the Old Almonte Town Hall auditorium in a show of support for The Hub reconstruction project. Singers reached deep into their pockets – donating $2200 at the door, and purchasing $500 worth of homemade goods baked by The Hub volunteers. Together with other lump-sum donations – the event raised close to $3,000.
Over the course of two hours, the wooden floor and ceiling in the auditorium resonated with the beautiful blend of the many voices, singing in two, three and four-part harmony. The singers sang a west African sunrise song, a South African song to celebrate resilience, a simple arrangement based on Pachelbel’s Canon, a song to promote compassion, world peace and love, a traditional gospel song and a seasonal round. At the break, people chatted with their neighbours, made new friends, purchased baked goods, and caught up on news from those they hadn’t seen in awhile. There were smiles, words of encouragement and plenty of best wishes exchanged for 2019. It was an honour to have had the opportunity to lead so many enthusiastic singers.
Rhythm & Song Winter/Spring Session
If you are someone who has “more singing” on your list of New Year’s resolutions, consider the following benefits:
- releases endorphins and oxytocin – helping to decrease stress and anxiety
- lowers blood pressure
- tones facial muscles, diaphragm and intercostal muscles
- develops ability to breath deeply and improves posture
- improves memory
- increases empathy between cultures
- creates a sense of belonging and community.
Rhythm & Song Community Choir’s winter/spring session begins the week of January 21st. There are two groups in Almonte -Monday afternoons 1:00 – 2:30pm or Wednesday evenings 7:30-9:00pm. Both are held in the multipurpose room of the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum.
