Doris Scanlon — obituary

Scanlon, Doris Helen (née Wiskin)

September 15, 1927 – January 14, 2019

Doris passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of her family at the age of 91. Beloved wife of 63 years of the Reverend Canon James P. Scanlon. Dear mother of Esther Jane Scanlon (Daniel Berg) of Pakenham, Peter Michael Scanlon (Kathryn) of Cobourg. Loving grandmother of Alexander and Caitlin. Survived by sister in law Connie Wiskin. Treasured friend of so many whose lives were forever touched by her faith and loving actions year in and year out in so many different communities.

The family welcomes friends to join them at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Almonte (70 Clyde Street) on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 10:30 am for a memorial service. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations can be made to The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, 80 Hayden St, Toronto, ON M4Y 3G2 (https://pwrdf.org/) or to The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (Mental Health Services), 55 Rideau Street, Suite 4 Kingston, ON K7K 2Z8 (https://uhkf.ca/).

Born and raised in Kingston, Doris was a woman of strong faith and led a full and fulfilling life as a minister’s wife. One year at the annual general meeting of the Diocese of Ontario, she was publicly celebrated as the best minister’s wife in the diocese. Her path was one of faith and love, exemplified in the small acts of kindness that she sprinkled through her days. Not only was she a wonderful, warm-hearted and generous hostess with a great talent for baking, she also dressed impeccably, walking around looking like Jackie Kennedy, even in the rough wilds of Northern Quebec.

She took care of people everywhere she went, connecting deeply with women from all walks of life, whether they be from Cree and Mining Communities up North, from Kingston or finally, those here in Pakenham and Almonte. Wherever she went she was loved and the gifts that she gave so many people are the most precious gifts of all – the gifts of faith and love.

An electronic guestbook is available through the Kingston funeral home for those wanting to send messages of condolence.
