Mayor Lowry responds to area flooding

Mayor Christa Lowry, April 26, 2019

Over the last eight days, we have witnessed the power of Mother Nature in full force across the Municipality. And sometimes she can sure be cruel. Like other communities in Lanark County and throughout the province, localized flooding is heavily impacting some of our residents. While we are fortunate that most of our roads are open and public infrastructure is in good shape, there are many private homes experiencing severe flooding. I have been receiving many inquiries from residents and I want you to know I am getting those messages. If I have not responded to you, I apologize; my time and attention has been focused on assisting those most affected by the flooding.

Unlike Ottawa and Renfrew County where projected water levels are expected to significantly increase in the coming days, the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) has indicated that our water levels have stabilized. Significant rainfall and wind today and tomorrow could cause additional pressure on these areas in flood conditions.

To those impacted by the floods: Please be sure to drink bottled water in case well water may have become contaminated. If at any time it is unsafe to remain in your home, please ensure you have arrangements made for alternative accommodations. If you need help securing safe accommodations, please contact me directly at clowry@mississippimills.ca or 613-816-1716. Your courage and grit is remarkable. Stay strong. Stay safe.

To those not directly impacted by the floods: Please continue to support residents who are being heavily hit by the floods. Many are emotionally and physically exhausted from a week or more of sandbagging and protecting their homes and private property. Thank you to those residents who have volunteered to help their neighbours. Keep in mind, once the waters have receded and clean-up begins. To register as a volunteer please send your contact information (name, phone, and e-mail) and availability to town@mississippimills.ca so we can coordinate and dispatch volunteers to areas affected by flooding.

With the support of the Public Works Department and the Fire Chief, I have been on the ground assessing and monitoring water levels and checking with residents in impacted areas all week. I will continue to do so over the weekend to ensure the safety of our residents.

Christa Lowry, Mayor of Mississippi Mills
