A predatory backyard bird visitor

by Brent Eades

On Saturday morning I heard a twittering of distressed birds and looked out at the feeders, which my camera is always pointing towards. I found this hawk — either a Cooper’s or a Sharp-Shinned, I’m not sure which — pinning an unfortunate Mourning Dove beneath its talons on the ground. After a moment it flew off with its prey into some nearby trees.

A bit distressing to watch, of course — I’ve grown fond of my semi-daily Mourning Dove visits — but that’s nature.
