Saturday, May 2, 2015 marks Canadian Authors for Indies Day. The celebration has spread across the country with more than 500 authors and 113 bookstores participating.

Mill Street Books in Almonte welcomes four local authors who are committed  to supporting independent bookstores. Throughout the day, they will greet customers and recommend and discuss books. There will be treats and freebies and great recommendations all day!  Drop by and meet the authors and support your local independent bookstore!

Jan Andrews, storyteller and author of many books for children, starts at 11:00 am. From 12:00-1:00. Political journalist and author Susan Delacourt will champion her recommendations: The Longer I’m Prime Minister (Wells); Building the Orange Wave (Lavigne); Common Ground (Trudeau) and Who We are (May). She wonders if the book sales will serve as a mini-poll on this year’s election. Tim Cook,  historian and author of several books about the military history of Canada will be in from 1:00 – 2:00pm.

The goals of Authors for Indies are to increase customer traffic, raise awareness of the importance of independent bookstores, strengthen relationships between authors and booksellers, and showcase local writers. Inspired by the “Indies First” campaign that originated in California in 2013, Vancouver based author Janie Chang launched the Canadian version and the idea has been enthusiastically received across the country. It is an author initiative to support the continuation of the independent bookstores. Renowned author Ann-Marie MacDonald says “Do something wonderful: Support Canada’s independent bookstores”.
