Almonte Lawn Bowling Club, Centennial Cup Tournament, 27 June

The day began with threatening weather but the Almonte Lawn Bowling Club Centennial Tournament began at 9:30 AM, 30 minutes early. The three dozen participants from Ontario, District 16 were determined to play in the Club’s annual three game event.  The first game, finishing around 11:30 AM, enjoyed relatively warm and rain clear weather. As the first game scores were finalized the participants enjoyed a great lunch prepared by the Club ladies and with the very generous support of the Waterside retirement residence in Carleton Place.

During the second game the weather began to deteriorate and high winds threatened to damage the erected tents around the Green. With increasing clouds, the sounds of thunder and the sight of lightning in the visible distance the players left the Green for safety and there was a slight delay until the weather somewhat improved. Returning to the Green the players managed to finish the second game without further interruption. However, while the Tournament coordinator was finalizing scores and preparing for the final game the weather turned decidedly foul.   Heavy rains and high winds struck the Green and forced the cancellation of the final game. Although unable to finish the tournament the Club was able to award individual keeper trophies to the team with the highest aggregate score after the second game, before they departed for home.

The Club continues to welcome new members, who may watch members playing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening at 157 Robert St.
