Several dozen local residents waded into the Mississippi River beside the Old Town Hall to voice their objections to the planned Enerdu hydroelectric project in the heart of Almonte.
As reported earlier in the Millstone, Enerdu plans to hoe-ram or blast out a portion of the riverbed in the heart of town in order to divert river water to a 5,000 square foot powerhouse it intends to build alongside the Maple Leaf Flour Mill.
A reporter from the the CBC was covering the event, and local resident Linda Manzer was interviewed live by CBC radio as the protest began.
A ‘Happy Hour’ gathering in the river is planned for tomorrow evening in the same location. People are encouraged to bring chairs and beverages, organizers say.
