The Almonte and District Horticultural Society had a lot of fun in April with some students at Naismith Public School.  In one and a half days, three members assisted 62 Kindergarten students and 20+ Grade 5 and 6 students from the science class in planting vegetable and flower seeds.  All students planted a large variety of seeds to be planted in the kindergarten outdoor classroom and in new planters being built for the Grade 5 & 6 students.

A number of Horticultural Society members will again help the students later in the spring to plant their seedlings outside.  A very special session was spent with four boys from the science class who opted to grow vegetables for the Food Bank as part of their social justice assignment.  It was an honour and a privilege to be able to assist them and we have obtained a garden where they will be able to plant their seedlings and tend to the crops during the summer.

On Saturday, May 9 the Society held their annual plant sale.  Members contributed a wide variety of seedlings, perennials, houseplants, vegetable plants, herbs, books, used gardening tools and other gently used items for sale.  We wish to thank everyone who supported us and for making it our most successful sale ever.

The Society has had some interesting speakers and/or demonstrators since January and there are more exciting presentations yet to come.  At the June 1 meeting, Brian Carson will show a power point presentation on the Beauties of the Burnt Lands Alvar.  This is a unique habitat within Mississippi Mills and as he is donating his fee to the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists campaign to protect the alvar from development, we are pleased to have him educate us on its value and to contribute with Brian to support their campaign to preserve the alvar.  On Monday, June 22nd, Joanne Smith of Brantim Country Garden Centre will demonstrate how to prepare a hanging basket and will generously donate her fee to this campaign as well.
