Greetings from theHumm! As usual in this dynamic community, this week offers an eclectic sampling of events that promise to be good for you and good fun to boot. First up, in the "good for you" category: if you have a sweetie-pie who might be hoping for some special attention 'round about the 14th of the month (that's Tuesday… aka Valentine's Day…), don't forget that your very own downtown offers a delightful variety of gifts, flowers, romantic restaurants, and chocolate. Show some local love!

On Wednesday the 15th, you can learn how to Prevent Cancer Now at a multimedia presentation at the Almonte Old Town Hall. Entitled Prevention is the Cure, it promises to give you the information you need to dramatically reduce your risk of ever getting this dreaded disease. Special guest, Dr. Dugald Seely, ND of the newly formed Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre, will speak on whole person, complementary options for cancer care and prevention.

On Friday the 17th, the next event in the Almonte Lecture Series presents Peter Larson speaking on "Jerusalem Today". Peter writes: "The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians has been going on for my whole life — without ever seeming to improve. On taking my retirement in 2008, I decided to take a trip there to see what things look like. I spent two weeks with an Israeli organization dedicated to finding a just solution. Most of my time was spent in East Jerusalem, and the occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank. I will share with you what I saw, and how my trip has changed my perspective on the key issues."

All weekend long, there will be fun for the whole family at Fulton's Pancake House and Sugar Bush as they host their Opening Weekend Celebrations! Special events include horse-drawn sleigh rides and face painting, and visitors can explore the trails and playground for a day of outdoor fun. While you're there, keep an eye out for some distinctive M-shaped hoofprints… On Saturday, Bob Volks of Gilligallou Bird, Inc. will give a talk about local birds and the feeders at Fulton's.

Then on Saturday night, you have a choice of two musical events in Carleton Place. If you're ready to party, don't miss the Mardi Gras Celebration at The Valley BBQ, featuring the impossible-to-sit-still-for stylings of Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo. This is even a party with a purpose, as it will be raising funds for Soldier On, an organization that delivers fitness programs to ill or injured Canadian Forces personnel.

And if you're in a more contemplative mood, you can catch a house concert featuring Kristine Schmitt & her Special Powers (gotta love that band name). Find out all the details and reserve your ticket by emailing

Have a great week and a fun weekend!
