Lawn bowling: Doreen Morgan Memorial Tournament

If only Wednesday had been Tuesday.

Once again Mother nature conspired against the Almonte Lawn Bowling Club as it began it’s final inter-club tournament of the season. The day began for the Doreen Morgan Memorial Tournament under a light overcast sky, which remained steady for the first of three 12 end games.  After the first game the participants enjoyed a Club and sponsor (Waterside Retirement Residence) provided lunch while Club members refilled water bottles and prepared for the second game.

The second game began about 12:30 and proceeded without incident for about an hour and then the skies began to darken and thunder could be heard accompanied by the occasional flash of lightning.  Ontario Lawn Bowling regulations now stipulate that should thunder be heard or lightning observed the players must vacate the Green for a minimum of 30 minutes. After a prolonged delay and the onset of rain the tournament was cancelled. Fortunately, during the second game the players had all completed six of the 12 required ends and the Club was able to declare winners and award trophies.

We can only hope that next year Mother nature is somewhat kinder to us.
