Media descend on Almonte as hundreds protest Enerdu scheme

by Brent Eades

Reporters and camera crews from CTV, CBC and the Ottawa Citizen came to Almonte to cover today’s noon-hour protest against Enerdu’s plan to build a massive hydro plant in the heart of town.

Several hundred local residents met at the Old Town Hall and spread out along the riverfront carrying “Save Our River” signs and chanting opposition. They then assembled on the bridge by Town Hall to launch a volley of beach balls into the water — a symbolic comment on various levels of government “dropping the ball” by failing to stop the Enerdu scheme. Volunteers quickly rounded up the dropped balls to prevent them from drifting downstream.

The television networks conducted numerous interviews with residents, and the CBC ‘live tweeted’ throughout the event.  Organizers hope to see stories appear on TV and in the Citizen over the weekend.
