The first of four Syrian refugee families will soon experience firsthand what is meant by The Friendly Town. After three years of living in a refugee shelter, the parents, their five-year-old daughter and nine-year-old-son will be welcomed by Holy Name of Mary, one of the four groups in Almonte working to bring refugee families to our community.

The other three groups, ABC-Welcome, St Paul’s Anglican Church and the Almonte United Church (SPAUC), and Team Almonte anticipate welcoming families in the near future. These groups’ efforts and the flow of information are coordinated by the umbrella group the Syrian Refugee Committee of Mississippi Mills (SRCMM).

The SRCMM is collecting clean lightly used clothing for men, women and children. The clothing will be sorted and distributed to families as they arrive. Although our immediate need is for this family of four, it is necessary to collect a wide variety of sizes, rather than wait for the specific needs of each family as they arrive. There will be insufficient time between notification that a family will be coming to the community and their arrival to arrange clothing requirements. Clothing that is not used will be redistributed within the community.

To donate clothes, please contact SRCMM Clothing Coordinators Terri Clarke or Arthur Clarke, 613 256 1725 or
