Are you retired…not expired? Join the new walking group from Mills Community Support on May 31
If you love walking in nature, the new “Retired Not Expired” walking group from Mills Community Support might be just the thing for you. Mills Community Support offers this event on the last Wednesday of each month, with plans to visit a new and different venue each month. On May 31st we plan to visit the Bill Mason Centre near Dunrobin in West Carleton. It’s a perfect site to view turtles and other wildlife along with spring flowers and birds coming back from the south after the winter months.
The group’s first outing took place on April 26, when 12 seniors ventured out to the Mer Bleue Conservation Area in east Ottawa of Almonte accompanied by our new walking group guides, Allan Goddard and Neil Carleton, both experienced field naturalists and members of the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists. Transportation was courtesy of Betsy the Bus, piloted by Debbi O’Malley, a long-term volunteer bus driver. Our walkers took advantage of the high and dry boardwalk to access the bog, where they saw all kinds of birds and new spring flowers – and even got to feed a saucy chickadee when it boldly landed on the hand of one of the seniors. The group then enjoyed a picnic lunch at the Conservation Area before heading home.
