Most of the time, preparing these weekly highlight listings is an enjoyable but challenging task of looking at the extensive array of entertainment offerings available in this area and choosing a select few to recommend to you, dear readers. The next three weeks are the exception that proves the rule. Everyone is busy shopping, dropping in, and making rather merry… and that includes the region's event organizers. Of course, there are still a few happening to draw your attention to.
On Tuesday, December 13, the Carleton Place Town Singers present their Christmas Around the World concert starting at 7pm at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Under the expert direction of Kristine MacLaren, this community choir's Christmas concert has become a highlight of the season, often featuring accomplished guest musicians and singers.
The jolly, old elf himself returns to Almonte on Saturday, December 17, for more photo ops. Bring the family for photos with Santa at BH Photography. For only $10 you get a 5×7 print and for $10 more you get the electronic file — proceeds to the Young Awards Foundation.
On the afternoon of Sunday, December 18, grab some friends and head to the Barley Mow in Almonte for a Traditional Song Celebration. Lead a song or sing along — traditional songs such as sea shanties and old gospel tunes — all welcome.
Also on Sunday are two Food Bank fundraising concerts. Enjoy a Carleton Place Country Christmas with hosts Jerry Flynn and Judi Moffat and several well-known, local performers — concert starts at 2pm. On Sunday evening in Pakenham, St. Andrew's United Church plays host to a Tapestry of Light Celtic Christmas Concert featuring community voices accompanied by a Celtic winds consort.
And finally, there is no better way to wind down a day of Christmas shopping or enjoy a post-Christmas evening with friends than stopping in at the Barley Mow on a Thursday evening to hear Terry Tufts. A superb singer, songwriter and guitarist, Terry is also a delightful performer. Highly recommended.
