Winners of Business Awards presented at the Mills Chamber of Commerce Gala

The Mississippi Mills Chamber of Commerce today announced the winners for its annual Business Awards presented at last night’s Award Gala in Old Town Hall in Almonte. The Chamber received a total of thirty nominations in four categories.

In the Outstanding Employee category the winner was Nancy Fulton of Levi’s Home Hardware.  In presenting the award on behalf of the sponsor Patrice’s Independent Grocers, Nicole Guthrie said: “Nancy has happily served her community in many ways over the past

Thirty years ago Nancy was a founding member of the Light Up the Night committee, on which she still actively serves. She was instrumental in bringing the Ride For Dad motorcycle fundraiser to Mississippi Mills.

In the category of Creativity & Innovation, the award was presented to Lilly White, the founder and principal of the Whitelight and the White Lilly.  Lilly’s husband John White, accepted the award on Lilly’s behalf as she was away on business .

Gord Pike, co-sponsor of the award with the Mill Street Crepe Company, said, “Through her work at WhiteLight and her retail store, Lilly has helped put this area on the spiritual New Age map. She has helped reach out to a formerly untapped customer group with events like Breakfast With Soul and Power Up Your Life. By holding these events downtown or involving other local businesses, she promotes and markets the wider area and business community.  ”

Community Involvement, an area in which there is always strong list of nominees, went to Don Wiles. The award, sponsored by the Town of Mississippi Mills,  was presented by  Mayor John Levi, who said, “Don has been a tireless advocate for community-based life-long education. He has been the organizer and driving force behind the very popular Almonte Lecture Series, and funds raised by the series have been re-invested in local initiatives such as Bicycle Month.  Don has leveraged his long-standing relationship with Carleton University to advance the idea of creating a satellite campus here in Mississippi Mills.”

The final award of the evening for Economic Contribution went to Almonte’s premier puppeteer and founder of the annual Puppets Up! International Puppet FestivalNoreen Young.  Cindy Hobbs and Faye Potter, managers of the local
RBC Royal Bank
branches in Almonte and Pakenham, presented the award on behalf of the bank which has been the principal sponsor of the Chamber’s annual Business Awards for the past three years.  In her introduction Ms Hobbs said, “Thanks to Noreen, Almonte is now known near and far as the puppet town. As the festival is such an unusual event, it draws people to town who may not otherwise have even heard of Almonte, or believed it was too far to go to visit. Not only downtown businesses benefit. In 2012, Neilcorp Homes was the presenting sponsor for the festival, and they sold more homes that weekend than in the preceding few months!”
