In and Out of the Water
by Arya Burkart

Have you ever looked up while underwater on a beautifully warm and sunny day? The experience is nothing short of magical.
Imagine yourself running to the water, the heat of the sun upon your skin, the sound of rolling waves in the distance as you race toward that wonderful, refreshing treat. The warmth of the soft sand getting cooler beneath your feet as you approach the shore. Stopping at the edge of the water, a little wave tickles your toes, eagerly inviting you into its home. The feeling of anticipation rushes over your whole body, much like the moment right before you dive into a generous portion of your favourite dessert, or the feeling that stirs inside you as you slowly pick up your Christmas present that’s sparkling under the delicate lights of the tree.
You take a first step in, feeling the gentle water swirl around your feet and the sudden shock of the cold rush through you. Taking a step back to regain your courage, you run straight into the water without hesitation. At last, all that built-up excitement is released!
As you swim deeper and deeper, the water hugs your body gently and lovingly, holding you in a reassuring embrace as you rock to the rhythm of the waves. You savour this moment you’ve been waiting for before taking one last deep breath and finally diving in.
And now…you’ve entered into another world.
That same underwater world that you’ve heard of in your storybooks – peaceful, vast and mysterious. While you sink slowly to the bottom like the last fallen leaf of autumn, you listen to the comforting, muffled sounds of the above as tiny bubbles rush along your skin like little fishes kissing you on their way to the water’s surface.
Slowly opening your eyes, you look around though your surroundings are slightly out of focus. Then you turn your gaze up and you’re suddenly enchanted by the shimmering sunbeams streaming through the rippling waves above you. It looks as though someone has spilt a jar of fairy dust on the water. You admire the beauty for a short fleeting moment, and before you know it, it’s time to head back up.
After spending what feels like hours with the water, you walk back out onto the beach, feeling heavy on the ground and the grains of sand clinging to your soaked feet. You grab your towel that’s been warming up in the sun all day and wrap it around you like you’re climbing into a cozy cocoon. As you dry off you watch the water sparkling in the distance, imagining they’re fallen stars from the heavens dancing gracefully on the crystal waves.
And just as you begin to head back home, you turn and whisper “goodbye”, noticing in the corner of your eye the water waving right back at you.
