Christine Johnston – obituary

Christine JohnstonChristine grew up in Montreal West, the eldest sister of two brothers. In her youth, she was  a dancer, a figure skater and a tenacious competitor in many sports. The friendships she formed in high school and university, she treasured for a lifetime.

Upon graduating from McDonald College with a specialty in physical education, she married her high school sweetheart. She began her career teaching elementary school, and supporting her husband during his last years at McGill. In the early 1970’s they moved to Europe, living and working in Switzerland and England, before settling down to raise a family in Ottawa. After bringing up their three children, she became a trainer and then the coordinator of adult fitness programs at the Ottawa YM-YWCA. In the 90’s, she formed a partnership (Fitstarts) which provided wellness programs for corporate clients. In the early 2000’s she and her husband became members of the Unitarian Church, where she generously volunteered her time in the church community.

In 2008, the couple started a new chapter of their lives in Almonte, where Christine took to her role as grandmother with great enthusiasm; as a “dance mom” for her grandkids here, and doting Grandma in Whitby. As a member of the Almonte community, Christine joined the Mississippi Grannies (Stephen Lewis Foundation), tended to her splendid garden, and shared the Riverwalk with her devoted husband of 45 years.

Her family would like to thank the expert staff at the Almonte General Hospital, and the nurses who tended to her at home with dignity and care.
