1.  The first ready-to-eat commercially sold breakfast cereal in North America was Shredded Wheat, produced in Denver, Colorado in 1893.
2.  The actress Sarah Bernhardt was photographed in her Paris studio wearing a jacketed trouser-suit in 1876.  The bloomers introduced by Ms Amelia Bloomer in 1848 were baggy pantaloons worn under a short skirt and not generally accepted as trousers.
3.  Susanna Moodie was a British-born Canadian 19th century author from a literary family, the best-known of which was Catharine Parr Traill.  Moodie, who was suspicious of the ‘yankee influrence in Canada’, was highly regarded for her book, Roughing it in The Bush.
4.  The Atacama Desert is a desert plateau located on the Pacific Coast of northern Chile.
5.  Marriott is the largest hotel chain in the world, with 7,642 rooms available in 131 countries and territories.
