CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The LAM, a new Literary Arts Magazine, is dedicated to publishing prose, poetry, and art by authors and artists in Lanark County. We are seeking submissions on the theme of darkness and light for our first issue coming this Fall!
The LAM accepts visual art submissions as well as fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and essays. We welcome experimental pieces that challenge form and our preconceptions of what art can be.
Art Guidelines:
Medium: The LAM accepts digital and traditional artwork and photography. We accept artwork that:
- Stands on its own;
- May be paired with written submissions; and/or
- Accompanies text written by the artist.
Prose and Poetry Guidelines:
Word Limit: 3,000 words. Long-form poetry should not exceed 60 lines.
Genres: We accept all genres.
General Information:
Theme: All successful submissions will conform to the issue’s theme: darkness and light.
Fees & Pay: There is no cost to submit to The LAM. As we are a fledgling publication, we do not currently have the means to pay our contributors. We hope to be able to do so in the near future! All contributors will receive a free copy of the magazine.
Copyright: You retain all rights to your work. Chosen works will be published once in our print publication in the issue for which they were submitted. As our magazine is exclusively in print, we will never publish your work online.
Multiple and Simultaneous Submissions: We encourage multiple submissions so long as they follow the word limit guidelines and adhere to the issue’s theme.
Simultaneous submissions are also welcome. Please let us know if your piece is accepted for publication elsewhere. The LAM does not currently accept reprints.
Eligibility: The LAM welcomes submissions from writers and artists residing in Lanark County. This includes: Mississippi MIlls, Carleton Place, Beckwith, Lanark Highlands, Montague, Drummond North Elmsley, Perth, Tay Valley, and Smiths Falls. You must have an address in one of these locales in order to be eligible for publication within our magazine.
Timeline: We are open to submissions until 11:59PM on 31 May 2025. Authors will be notified of results by 15 August 2025. All submissions will receive a response by email on or before this date indicating whether or not they have been selected. If you have not received a response by this date, please feel free to query the editors. Due to the workload associated with creating a magazine, we will not be able to provide feedback on your work at this time.
Formatting: Submissions should be emailed as a .docx attachment to submissions.thelam@gmail.com. The file name and subject line should be the category for consideration (ie: Art, CNF, Essay, Poetry, or Prose) followed by the title of the piece. Please do not include any identifying information in the file name. For example, a poem titled “Almonte” should be submitted as “POETRY: Almonte.” Please send multiple submissions as separate emails.
The LAM does not accept hardcopy submissions.
For art, please send a high quality reproduction of your choosing. The editors may reach out for additional files if required.
Please format your written entry as follows:
- Times New Roman, 12 point, black font
- Double spaced
- Word count in the top right hand corner of the first page
- No identifying author information on or in the document itself. We judge all submissions anonymously.
- Poetry is welcome to break these formatting guidelines as and where required by the piece.
AI: By submitting a piece to the LAM, you certify that no generative AI was used in the creation of your piece. The LAM seeks to publish artists that have created their submissions in whole. Thank you!
