Stephen Brathwaite moved to the area and bought land in Cedarhill in the 1970’s. His deep interest in the history of the area and of Almonte and its potential have driven him to be pivotal in helping in the transformation of Almonte into one of the most lively, inspiring communities in Ontario . His background in public art and in particular the use of architectural glass provides a fascinating story of the trajectory to the re-energizing a 19 century mill town. Stephen writes:
“In the late eighties I did brief stints studying architectural art glass design at the Derix Glass Studios in Kevelaer and Taunesstein Germany and at the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State.
I met a variety of major artists working with glass in strange new ways and was given a list of installations that I should go and see. I rediscovered the slides from that time recently and simply wanted to show them and perhaps where the inspiration of that time led me.
Whether in glass or later in materials including fibre glass, bronze, steel and stone my work has been almost exclusively site specific. It has been about the materials and the context including the clients themselves. In that way it has been a form of story telling.”
