Joe Flynn — obituary

The family of Joseph Anthony Flynn is deeply saddened to announce his passing on January 9th, 2025 at Almonte General Hospital after a brief illness. In his 80th year, “Joe”, was very active. For over a decade, Joe worked and found great joy as a school bus driver. He went to great lengths to make sure all the kids were safe and often spoke of them.  Joe could often be found socializing at the Tim Hortons (between bus runs), or taking care of things on the farm – unless he was out helping friends and family, which he always found time to do. Joe was a devout Catholic and his faith was central to how he lived his life.

Joe had a rare combination of practical skills, intellect and kindness. He graduated from St. Patrick’s University in 1968 and spent his adult life pursuing a variety of paths that tapped into his intelligence, his love of working with his hands, and his dedication to helping others, such as accounting, building log homes, real estate, and farming. His early adulthood saw him exploring life in Toronto, British Columbia and Alberta with his young family, but Joe’s love of home and extended family brought him back to Corkery and the Flynn family farm. He was deeply interested in the history and people of Corkery, Almonte and the Ottawa Valley and loved sharing his knowledge.

Joseph Anthony Flynn, born May 27, 1945, was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth (Carter) Flynn and John James Flynn, his son John Thomas, and his niece Rose Mary Flynn-Younge. He is survived by his former wife Darlene Coyne and their children and grandchildren, Starr Thompson (Phill, Flash, Flip, Chase), Joseph Peter (Kelly Pettit, Niamh Flynn), and Sarah Gideon (Craig, Ava, Carter), his older brother Patrick, and his younger brother James (Kathy née Morrow). He is also survived by his nieces Shannon (Daniel Moisan, Naomie, Emilie), his God-daughter Erin and nephew, James Harold, as well as his close friend Debbie Metcalfe.

The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at the Almonte General Hospital and the Queensway Carleton Campus of the Ottawa Hospital for their care and dedication, as well Rose McKay, who made special effort to take care of Joe in his time of need.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Joe’s life, 11 am on Saturday, January 18th 2025, for a mass at St. Mary’s Church in Almonte, followed by a reception at the Almonte Civitan Centre from 12:30 to 3:30.

For those who would like to make a donation in Joe’s name, please donate to the Ottawa Mission at (613)234-1155 or ottawamission.com.
