Hummingbird ChocolatesThe Ottawa Citizen devoted the front page of its Food section today to Almonte’s  Hummingbird Chocolate Maker. The chocolate has been receiving rave reviews since the owners Erica and Drew Gilmour started making it in their Stittsville home. They are now located in the Thoburn Mill in Almonte and on Saturdays during the month of February are offering tours (please try to reserve a day early as space is limited) of their bright facility. Hummingbird has become a huge success story with caterers and luxury shops in Ottawa (Thyme and Again, the Red Apron, Epicuria, World of Tea) scrambling to obtain their limited product. Local Almonte retailer Pêches et Poivre on Mill Street carries the line.  The couple are now selling their chocolate bars around the world, to people who first tasted it in the Ottawa area.

The couple got the idea for their venture after tasting exceptional chocolate while working in Haiti, helping after the devastating earthquake. They source their chocolate from several Caribbean and Latin American countries but want to establish an exclusive relationship directly with Dominican Republic and Haitian farmers who have some superb heritage
