For each of the past four years, the Community Compost Composer team has been accepting over 2000 bags of Almonte’s fall leaves dropped off by local residents to be made into fungal-dominant compost, also known as leaf mould or Gardeners’ Gold!
Beginning after the Thanksgiving weekend (i.e. Tuesday Oct 13/26) the Community Compost Composers team is ready again to gratefully accept Almonte’s leaves to make compost for us all!
Leaf drop-off is at 4925 March Road, 0.9 km east of the Almonte roundabout. Anytime. Leave us a bag of leaves and take a used empty bag. Trailer loads welcome … drop them on one of our tarps. Save the 10 km ride to Howie. Do your part to regenerate our living systems.
Tree leaves and white pine needles are the ideal raw material for our processes. To prepare the leaves, we chop them up with a lawnmower. Please limit woody material to twigs or branches smaller than your baby finger. It is crucial for the safety of our team of volunteers that non-organic material such as stones, gravel, glass, wire and asphalt be excluded from the bagged leaves. Also, if you use Roundup or other chemicals, please do not bring this affected material to us.
We do a fun number of things to make our compost effective at enlivening the biology of soil including adding spent Equator coffee grounds … and, this year … biochar! Check out our website for further information about fungal dominant compost at communitycompostcomposers.ca
Fun, friendship and a good workout – If you are interested in getting involved with Community Compost Composers, join our cool volunteer group. This project is associated with Climate Network Lanark and the after-expenses proceeds from the sale of our compost to homeowners is directed towards addressing the changes of climate we are all experiencing now. Compost is provided free to community gardens and small-scale vegetable farms.
