Almonte market enjoys a renaissance

The Almonte Saturday morning market (8:45 a.m.-noon) is enjoying a lively summer in the library parking lot at the upper end of Mill Street in Almonte. Delicious baking, fresh salads and vegetables, candy, pottery, photography, carving are all available on summer Saturday mornings. Moira Wilkie of Per Ardua Farm, President of the Almonte Farmers’ Market, told the Millstone that the market, founded in 1991, has had its ups and downs but has been growing the last couple of years. It is now a lively go-to place on the weekends and, as a bonus, shoppers are serenaded by live music as they browse.

Moira Wilkie of Per Ardua Farm has been a regular at the market for many years. She displays her array of garden fresh vegetables. Moira comes from a long line of Almonte area farmers. Her father was a founder of the market in 1991.

Baker extraordinaire Katie Thom serves Mary Lumsden of Mill Street Books and friend delicious baked goods. Customers come early to get Katie’s famous lemon tarts and butter tarts.

Potter Ian Paige is noted for the beauty of his forms  and glazes. He uses only local glazes, making his work distinctly “Lanark County”

Local musicians prepare to serenade shoppers at the Saturday morning market.
