Residents and visitors are advised that water flows on the Mississippi River are currently significantly higher than normal for this time of year.
According to the Mississippi River Power Corporation, current flows are approximately 58 cubic metres per second (CMS) and continue to rise. The average flow for early August is approximately 14 CMS, meaning current flows are more than 450% higher than normal.
These elevated flows are creating stronger and faster-moving currents throughout the river system, including in areas where significant currents are not typically present during summer months.
River users urged to exercise caution
Anyone using canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, or other small watercraft should be aware that:
- River flows are currently more than four times the seasonal average
- Currents are significantly stronger than normal and may be present in unexpected areas
- Nearly one week after the major rainfall event, flows are still increasing, meaning currents continue to strengthen
- Conditions may be challenging even for experienced paddlers and can quickly overwhelm inexperienced users
Areas of particular concern
- The stretch between the bridge at the Almonte Old Town Hall and the Upper Falls
- The boat launch area at Metcalfe Geoheritage Park

- Wear a properly fitted lifejacket

- Be aware of changing river conditions
- Consider postponing your trip if you are unfamiliar with high water conditions
While the river may appear calm from shore, currents are much stronger than what is typically experienced in August.
