Bert Elsner — obituary

Elsner, Bert H.

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Bert Elsner, lifetime resident of Almonte, Ontario, on March 9, 2026, at home, with his family by his side.

Bert was predeceased by his loving wife Cindy (Larose). Cherished Father of Malissa (Greg), Derrick (Tina), Cori-Jane (Guy) and Stepfather of Jennifer (Kurt). Proud Opa to his loving grandchildren, Teagan, Kaleb, Cayden, Ryker and Jas. Dearly missed by his brother, Henry (Maureen) and niece Amy. Predeceased by his parents, Alfons and Elfriede, and his brother Ralph.

Those who knew Bert, knew of his love for birds. Over the years, he raised homing pigeons, pheasants, peacocks, silkies and many others. He was a lifelong member of the Golden Triangle Racing Pigeon Club, of Smiths Falls, Ontario and the Canadian Racing Pigeon Union.

In his younger years, Bert spent much of his time working on the family dairy farms in Clayton and Appleton, Ontario. He then became a long-time employee, as head, ice cream maker at Peterson’s Ice Cream Factory in Almonte until its closure. Other jobs included working at a Rose Nursery in Carp, Ontario, and then moving on to lawn care in Almonte. In recent years, he enjoyed working at the Ashland (Horse) Farm, in Ashton, Ontario. As a lifetime resident of Almonte, his joy was caring for his racing pigeons and his immaculate gardens.

A Celebration of Bert’s life will be held Sunday, April 19, 2026, between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., at the Almonte Civitan Hall, 500 Almonte Street, in Almonte, Ontario.

All who knew and loved Bert, are welcome to attend and share in celebrating his life.
