Councillor Jill McCubbin

Contrary to some posts elsewhere on Facebook: the Gemmill Park upgrade, including the new skateboard park and splash pad, are being funded in a variety of ways. See attached chart from last night’s Council agenda.

I believe Council’s decision (re-confirmed at last night’s meeting) to move ahead with this project will benefit all of Almonte and Mississippi Mills. Council’s decision in this matter was motivated by increasing health and recreation choices in our municipality and by making our town attractive to young families (including grandparents!) in order that we have a vibrant community – which encourages economic growth and quality of life. Fiscal responsibility was also a big consideration in this resolution – and this is always the case.

Selling some parkland to help increase park resources overall was an incredibly tough process for the whole community and for Council, but please note: park area was not sold to build municipal parking lots or to roof a building or to help with the Pakenham library reno… Park revenues stay in parks and recreation. I realize many people don’t support the above thoughts, but I think that many people do.
