Friends of Gerry Huddleston seek donations for defence fund

News Release

Friday, August 28, 2015

With a five day trial slated for September and October, Friends of Gerry Huddleston are appealing for donations for the Gerry Huddleston Defence Fund.

Huddleston, the former executive director of the Almonte General Hospital/Fairview Manor Foundation, was charged with theft of $4,000 from the Foundation in December 2014 and with altering a bank document.

Having an unblemished, stellar 35-year career, including 20 years as a senior executive with two hospital foundations, Huddleston and his team are vigorously defending the charges. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and the case goes to Perth Provincial Court September 23, 24 and October 15, 21 and 22. None of the charges against Huddleston has been proven in court.

Donations from people in Almonte, Pakenham, Perth, Smiths Falls, Elgin and Brockville have been made to the Gerry Huddleston Defence Fund to assist with the significant expenses or the upcoming trial. Several of the donations have come from hospital foundation supporters.

After being charged Huddleston was dismissed without compensation by the Foundation. Facing the two charges has made it impossible to find employment.

“I have been overwhelmed by the amazing support from across the Ottawa Valley,” said Huddleston. “As I have travelled throughout the valley people that know me know I would never steal or commit fraud. I am 1,000 per cent innocent of both charges, and look forward to being acquitted of both charges.”

Huddleston and his family have expended more than $60,000 in retirement savings.

The account has been set up in trust to assist with Huddleston’s legal expenses. For more information, contact Craig Rogers at Rogers Law Firm in Carleton Place (613-257-7620) or G. Huddleston at 613-532-1062.

Huddleston was the leader of two hospital fundraising teams that raised several millions of dollars for the redevelopment of hospitals and the purchase of life-saving patient care equipment. He began his career as a journalist and spent close to 10 years with the Smiths Falls Record News, the Record News EMC as a sports editor and later editor and a sports reporter at the Stratford Beacon Herald daily newspaper. Huddleston was an executive assistant with Lanark-Renfrew MPP Leo Jordan at Queen’s Park in Toronto and a special assistant with Minister of Government Services and Lanark-Carleton MP Paul Dick on Parliament Hill. Huddleston spent three three-year terms as Smiths Falls town councillor and served as a school board trustee with the Lanark County School Board.
