In the latest edition of Home Hospice North Lanark’s newsletter, we take a moment to reflect on the growth of our organization, the dedication of our volunteers, and the impact of our work in the community. At the heart of this issue is a moving tribute to Jane Henderson, whose vision and leadership helped shape HHNL into what it is today. Jane’s passion for compassionate, community-based hospice care continues to inspire us as we move forward.
This issue also highlights our commitment to strengthening HHNL’s foundation for the future. We welcome Lisa Swant as our new Executive Director, as well as two new board members, Erin Walters and Barb Van Zanten.
At HHNL, our work is about more than just services—it’s about connection, support, and presence. This message is beautifully captured in the story of Marc Saulnier, one of our dedicated volunteers. Marc first encountered hospice care when he was caring for his mother decades ago. Now, as an HHNL Visiting Volunteer, he provides companionship, a listening ear, and even a friendly game of chess to those in need. His story highlights the profound impact that hospice volunteers can have—not just on those receiving care, but on the volunteers themselves.
Through Marc’s experience, we also shine a light on the importance of our caregiver and bereavement support programs. Whether through one-on-one visits, our Day Hospice program, or peer support groups, HHNL is there to walk alongside caregivers and those experiencing loss, offering comfort, understanding, and a sense of community.
Giving back comes in many forms, and our Comfort Crew ladies are a shining example of generosity in action. With knitting needles in hand and a deep sense of purpose, this dedicated group has crafted hundreds of items—lap blankets, shawls, mitts, socks, and more—for those in need. These handmade gifts are donated to local organizations such as The Hunger Stop, Lanark County Interval House, and long-term care homes in our community. We are incredibly grateful for their dedication and for the generous donations of wool that make this work possible.
As HHNL continues to grow, we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of hospice care. In this issue, we discuss why accreditation matters and how it ensures that we continue providing the best possible support to individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses.
One of our annual highlights, the Tree Fundraiser, helps support the important work that HHNL does year-round. This year, however, we are seeing lower sales than usual. As Board Chair Jan Watson shared:
“With all the snow we’ve had recently, it might be hard to think about spring—but it will be here before we know it! Our Tree Fundraiser is an important part of our work at HHNL, and this year, sales are lower than usual. If you’ve been considering purchasing a tree, now is a great time to do so” You can shop the variety of trees available at hhnl.ca/trees.
