In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Naismith Men’s Shed was looking for ways to stay connected while observing social distancing requirements. Home Hospice gave a Zoom presentation to the group, which led to a partnership between Home Hospice and the Men’s Shed carving group.
As part of this partnership, members of the Men’s Shed hand-carve comfort birds and donate them to Home Hospice for use in its programs.
Comfort birds are smooth wooden carvings designed to fit comfortably in the hand. Studies have shown that simply holding these carvings can help reduce anxiety and lower blood pressure. Home Hospice presents comfort birds to clients, caregivers, participants in its Practical Caregiver Training program, and members of its grief and bereavement support groups.
Since the partnership began, the Naismith Men’s Shed has donated more than 150 comfort birds to people throughout the local community. Each year, members typically carve and donate an additional 10 to 15 birds. Anecdotal reports suggest that these comfort birds not only provide comfort during stressful times, but also serve as lasting reminders of the support Home Hospice offers to individuals and families navigating some of life’s most difficult challenges.
Anyone interested in supporting this project can learn more or get involved by contacting Home Hospice or the Naismith Men’s Shed through their websites: hhnl.ca and naismithmensshed.ca.
