Jane Henderson — obituary

Henderson, Jane Ellen Mitchell

5 May1936 – 2 January 2025

On January 02, 2025, Jane Ellen Mitchell Henderson of Almonte, Ontario passed peacefully in her beloved town. Jane’s final illness was relatively brief. Jane is predeceased by her husband Dr. Ian Henderson.

Jane is lovingly remembered by her nephews, Neil Quintin Mitchell (Darla), Stephen Yates Mitchell (Sheila) and niece Clare Elizabeth Mitchell (Clare) and her great nieces and nephews Cameron (Sarah), Samantha, Graeme, Andrew (Kristin), Michael, Alex (Caitlin), and Carissa and her great grandnephews Leo and Carter; and her Molesworth family.

Jane held both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Nursing from McGill University. She began her career as a clinical instructor which laid the foundation for a distinguished journey in healthcare. Over the years, her expertise extended to nursing administration, long-term care and palliative care, with a focus on improving health services in Lanark and Renfrew Counties.

After moving to Ontario with Ian in the 1970’s Jane continued her work in healthcare with the Canadian Nurse’s Association as an administrator. From there she worked in a leadership role at our local Fairview Manor which took her on many Lanark County back roads. Jane’s work in long term care further continued with heading up the design and build of the Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew. Jane was also influential in the design of the Rosamond Wing of the Almonte General Hospital where she spent her last days.

Jane was a driving force in advancing palliative care in her community. She played a key role in establishing in-home palliative and end-of-life care. Jane served Home Hospice North Lanark (HHNL) as a Board Director, Vice Chair, Chair, Past Chair, and lastly after retiring, Jane returned to serve as Chair of the Accreditation Committee.

During Jane’s tenure, HHNL expanded its programs and services to include a Visiting Volunteer Program, Bereavement Support, and Advance Care Planning. These services ensured holistic, person-centered care for clients and their caregivers. Jane’s dedication has left a lasting impact on the quality and accessibility of palliative and end of life care in the Almonte area and on long term care in Lanark and Renfrew Counties.

In addition to her professional achievements, Jane was an active member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Almonte. In February 2019, she was elected as an Elder of the church, reflecting her deep commitment to her faith and community.

Jane resided with her late husband Ian in their well-chosen and loved home, Glenelvin Farm, in Ramsay Township near Almonte for over 50 years.
