JazzN.ca Bursary now available to high school music students!

MT-bursary MRJazzN.ca has announced that a Bursary has been established to provide financial assistance to high school students to help them explore their full musical potential by attending a summer jazz-centric music program, the Carleton University Jazz Camp (CUJC).

CUJC has enjoyed four extremely successful years. Students participate in a variety of activities such as big band ensembles, jazz combos, choir, jazz theory classes, ear training sessions, improvising classes, jam sessions, masterclasses, instructions and much more. Each evening during this 5 day program, students are treated to free concerts put on by the faculty and invited guests at the Kailash Mital Theatre. A final student concert for family, friends and the general public is held featuring each ensemble from the camp.

On Monday October 27, CUJC Director Mike Tremblay and Assistant Director Tim Bedner (both past JazzNhouse performers) will join Carleton University’s Supervisor of Performance Studies, Associate Professor Dr. James Wright, to visit local High School students. First stop is Almonte District High School (ADHS), as the guest of Music Teacher Shelley Smith and Principal Richard Ferguson. Then the trio will head to Carleton Place High School (CPHS) where Music Teacher Cynthia Yuschyshyn, Principal Eric Hardie and CPHS music students host the CUJC team. The idea of bringing the CUJC team to local high school students to explain the CUJC experience was proposed by Ms. Yuschyshyn and eagerly adopted by the two other schools. The Notre Dame Catholic High School music department and Music Director Mr. Tony Stuart, Principal Ken Crosby and NDCHS senior music students will be the final participants in the CUJC tour.

According to JazzN.ca co-founder, Arnie Francis, “the time is right to promote the fullness of music and mentorship among our youth and celebrate the dedication of their parents and music teachers.”TB-bursary MR

JazzN.ca and its supporters want to offer local youth the opportunity for musical development, coaching, performance and mentor-led learning. The JazzN.ca Bursary pays for tuition and (optionally) accommodation for students who qualify and attend the CUJC. Each JazzN.ca Bursary award is about $700 in value. JazzN.ca volunteers and fans are busy trying to raise funds for the 2015 JazzN.ca Bursary. Music lovers and supporters of music for youth are invited to donate an amount of their choice at http://www.jazzn.ca/bursary.html to support this important new initiative. Bursary winners will be announced in early June 2015.
