MONICA CATHERINE

THE PASSING OF A TRUE BLUENOSER

Monica Catherine Mayer, nee Fitzgerald, claimed her final rest on Friday, June 27, 2014 in Almonte, ON.  Monica was born in Queensport, NS in November 1922, one of ten children to Matthew and Cora Fitzgerald.

She met  Roland Joseph Mayer, in St John’s, Nfld. during WW II and in effect became a war bride, moving to the wilds of Northern Ontario in 1945.  They lived in Hornepayne, at that time an isolated Franco-Ontarian community, and moved to Capreol in 1947 where she lived for almost 60 years.  She was very active in her community, in particular with the Daughters of Isabella at Our Lady of Peace Church and in the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Canadian Legion.

Monica was the proud mother of five children:  Joan Ann (predeceased) (Allan), Lynn (Peter Jones, predeceased), Dan (Liz), Jim (Brenda), and Mary Catherine (Ross).    She delighted in visiting her children as they became scattered throughout Ontario and the US,  She was grandma to ten children:  Stephanie, Deryk, Craig, Mark, Joe, Meaghan, Trent, Shea, Hudson, Molly and delighted them with her renditions of turtle cake and frozen peanut butter pie.

At her last music session on Tuesday, Monica tapped her toes, continuing to demonstrate her love of down-home celtic music.   Much appreciation goes to the caring staff of the Fairview Manor Nursing Home in Almonte where she resided over the past few years.

Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Peace Church, Capreol, on Friday, July 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.   For those who may choose to honour Monica with a memorial donation, please consider the Alzheimer’s society.

Fare thee well Mom – we love you …..
